Let’s get to the main question: How often should you get an oil change? The general answer is every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. This equates to about once or twice a year. Changing the oil regularly will help maintain your vehicle’s performance and extend the overall life.

However, depending on your vehicle and how much you drive, this can change. Plus, if you don’t know the last time your oil was changed, you may need to find another way to decide when you should get an oil change.

Here are a few signs you can look out for:

• Engine Oil Light: Many newer cars have a light that comes on when you’re due for an oil change. This will either look like a genie lamp with a drop coming out of the end, or may just be the words ‘Change Oil Soon’.
•  Noise Level: Clean oil provides a barrier between the small metal pieces moving around in your engine. With that barrier, your engine should remain quiet. If it’s louder than normal, you probably need new oil.
• Smells Like Something Is Burning: If you notice a burning smell, this could be a sign you need an oil change. Burning smells may come from oil leaks or the engine overheating.
• Color of the Oil: You can also check the oil color. Clean oil is a light amber color but it gets dirty over time. If you check the oil and it’s a dark brown or black, you’ll need to have it replaced with new oil.
